NES and SNES colors! This was for a gallery, but it didn't make it in. Still, I'm always down for an excuse to draw Samus anyway ;w;

So, I guess there was no explanation for why Samus had purple skin?

It's complicated.
In the original NES, depending on how fast you finished it, Samus would take either her helmet off or the entire suit, looking like this:

kingandrook.files.wordpress.co…

As you can see, while a light brunette instead of a blonde, she's still a normal looking woman.

But if you started a game an placed the password: JUSTIN BAILEY media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m2qgrf…
Then you could play with Samus looking like this:

Looking with light purple skin and bright green hair. Completely different to how she looked in the ending.

My personal guess is that since the NES had a very limited color palette of how many colors it could display on screen at once, they had to choose a color set that matched most of the scenery so it wouldn't require to change the game's look completely.

The way Samus looked after a speed run from the old games to the newer ones is this: www.metroid-database.com/featu…
being NES, Game Boy, SNES and GBA in that order.
